3 weeks in Sri Lanka: the whole island, including the parts nobody drives

21 days, 1,885 km and about 50 hours of driving in total. A car with driver for the whole trip is $1,470 (2–3 people) or $1,995 in a van (up to 8), at the shoulder rate (July, August); December to February is 10% more and May to June 10% less. That is the vehicle, the driver, his food and his room, and fuel — not hotels. Three weeks is the first length that reaches the north and the east without cutting anything from the classic route. Priced on 21 days on the road at $70 a day for a car, because your driver is committed to you whether the vehicle moves or not. The 1,885 km alone would come to $774, so the days are the higher and fairer number here. 5 of the 16 legs are distances we have measured on the road; the rest are modelled from road geometry and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Drive times are modelled, not logged — our drivers are recording real ones and these numbers get replaced as they come in.

Why this shape

Jaffna is the reason to have three weeks. Six hours north of Anuradhapura, culturally a different country, and almost absent from published itineraries.

Wilpattu on the way north — the island's largest park, a fraction of Yala's jeeps, and the better leopard sighting if you are patient.

Trincomalee comes in from Polonnaruwa rather than as a separate excursion, which is what makes the loop work rather than doubling back.

What we left out, and why

Every itinerary is a subtraction. These are the ones we made, so you can put them back if we chose wrong.

Arugam BayThe surf coast is the one remaining gap. It fits if you drop Jaffna, and between May and September that is a reasonable trade.
Sinharaja and KitulgalaThe rainforest and the rafting river. Both go in on request; both need their own nights rather than a passing stop.
Adam’s PeakStill a special case. The climb starts at 2am in the pilgrimage season, December to May, and it needs a rest day after.

When to go, and what it costs then

This route touches both monsoons, which is its advantage: there is no month when all of it is wet. February and March are the best all-island window. From June to October the north and east are at their best while the south is not.

Questions people ask

Is Jaffna safe and worth it?

Yes to both. The road is good, the peninsula is quiet, and the islands off it — Nainativu, Delft — are unlike anywhere else in the country. It is the single least-visited thing on this route and the one guests talk about afterwards.

Three weeks with children?

It works better than a shorter trip, because you can build in days that are nothing but a pool. Tell us the ages and we will space the drives around them.

What is included in the price?

The vehicle, the driver, his meals and his accommodation, fuel and air conditioning. Not included: hotels, expressway tolls (passed on at cost), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. We take no commission from any hotel, shop or showroom, and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.
