8 days in Sri Lanka: the week, plus a safari and the fort

8 days, 1,035 km and about 27 hours of driving in total. A car with driver for the whole trip is $560 (2–3 people) or $760 in a van (up to 8), at the shoulder rate (July, August); December to February is 10% more and May to June 10% less. That is the vehicle, the driver, his food and his room, and fuel — not hotels. The eighth day is the one that buys a safari. This is the seven-day crossing with Yala and Galle Fort added, and Nuwara Eliya traded away. Prices last verified September 2026.

Priced on 8 days on the road at $70 a day for a car, because your driver is committed to you whether the vehicle moves or not. The 1,035 km alone would come to $425, so the days are the higher and fairer number here. 1 of the 8 legs are distances we have measured on the road; the rest are modelled from road geometry and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Drive times are modelled, not logged — our drivers are recording real ones and these numbers get replaced as they come in.

Why this shape

Yala goes in as a night at the park gate and a dawn drive. Afternoon safaris exist and are worse; the leopards move at first light.

Galle Fort earns its own night rather than being a rushed stop on the way to the airport. It is at its best in the hour before sunset when the day-trippers have gone.

Nuwara Eliya comes out. It is the stop most people are least sorry to lose, and dropping it keeps the hill section to one night at Ella.

What we left out, and why

Every itinerary is a subtraction. These are the ones we made, so you can put them back if we chose wrong.

When to go, and what it costs then

December to March end to end. Yala is normally closed for about six weeks from early September for the dry season — the dates move each year and we check them before we quote.

Our prices move with demand, and we publish the rule rather than hiding it. The bands below are set from Sri Lanka’s own 2025 arrivals figures — 2,362,521 visitors across the year, from 258,928 in December down to 132,919 in May. Demand swings 1.95×. We move price by 20 points.

Questions people ask

Yala or Udawalawe?

Yala has the leopards and the crowds. Udawalawe has the elephants, almost guaranteed, and a fraction of the jeeps. Families with young children are usually happier at Udawalawe.

Do we need two nights for a safari?

One night at the gate is enough for a dawn drive. Two nights buys you a second drive at a different time of day, which is how people who care about photographs do it.

What is included in the price?

The vehicle, the driver, his meals and his accommodation, fuel and air conditioning. Not included: hotels, expressway tolls (passed on at cost), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. We take no commission from any hotel, shop or showroom, and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.

How do we pay?

In cash at the end, in rupees, dollars, euros or pounds. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
