Kandy to Ella by car: price, distance and drive time
Kandy to Ella is about 121 km and takes roughly 3h 11m by road. As a one-way transfer we charge $82 for a car (2–3 people) or $110 for a van (up to 8). If this leg is part of a trip we are already driving for you, it costs $50 and $66 instead, because there is no empty return to pay for. Prices last verified September 2026.

Included: the vehicle, the driver, his meals and his room, fuel, and air conditioning. Not included: expressway tolls (passed on at cost — the airport link is Rs 400, the full Southern Expressway Rs 1,300), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. Extra kilometres beyond the route are charged at the same LKR 135/km car and LKR 180/km van as everything else. No airport surcharge, no night surcharge.
The road
The road climbs through Nuwara Eliya and drops into the Ella gap. Three hours of tight curves; nobody enjoys it on an empty stomach.

Would the train be better?
This is the famous one, and the train wins on experience. It takes six to seven hours against about three by road, reserved seats sell out weeks ahead, and you arrive with your luggage on your lap. The combination most of our guests choose: they ride the train and we drive their bags to Ella, so they board with a daypack and their cases are in the room before they arrive.
Does the month change the price?
Yes, and we publish the rule rather than hiding it. Prices above are the shoulder rate. December, January and February run 10% higher; March and November 5% higher; April, September and October 5% lower; May and June 10% lower. That is banded from Sri Lanka’s own 2025 arrivals figures — 258,928 visitors came in December against 132,919 in May. Demand swings 1.95×; we move price by 20 points. How long does Kandy to Ella really take?
About 3h 11m in normal conditions, modelled from the road distance and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Sri Lankan A-roads do not average what a European map suggests. We quote honestly and we would rather over-estimate than have you miss a check-in.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle. Two people or eight, the van costs the same. That is why the van makes sense for families and the car for couples.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track the flight and wait. There is no charge for waiting on a delayed arrival and no night surcharge.
Can I stop on the way?
Yes. Short stops are free. If detours add distance we charge the extra at LKR 135/km for a car and LKR 180/km for a van, and we tell you before we drive it.
How do I pay?
In cash at the end, in rupees, dollars, euros or pounds. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
