Colombo Airport transfers: what every destination actually costs
Negombo is $25, Kandy is $74, Galle is $105 and Ella is $135 — per vehicle, for a car carrying two or three people. A van for up to eight is $99 to Kandy. Your driver meets you at arrivals at any hour, there is no night surcharge and no airport surcharge, and we track the flight and wait if it is late. Prices last verified September 2026.

Distances marked modelled are calculated from road geometry and our own terrain factors; the rest are measured on the road. Drive times assume 38 km/h average. On the long expressway runs our model reads high — it does not know that 100 km of the Galle road is motorway — so treat those as an upper bound until our drivers have logged them. We would rather quote you a number we can defend than one that flatters us, and we are replacing every modelled figure with a measured one as the logs come in.
Why every quote you find is different
Search any airport run and you will get numbers that disagree wildly — the same trip quoted at $50 by one operator and $600 by another. Both can be honest, because they are selling two different things and almost nobody says which.

That is the same road, the same vehicle and the same driver, at $30 difference. If you are hiring a driver for your whole trip, never pay the transfer rate for the first leg — from us or from anyone.
Our return loading is also tapered rather than flat: 1.8× the one-way distance on a short hop, easing to 1.35× by 250 km, because a long run fills the driver’s day anyway and he stands a decent chance of picking up a return. A flat multiplier is how operators end up quoting $178 for a run that should be $135.
Landing at 3am?
Most flights from Europe and the Gulf land between midnight and 5am. You then have a choice: get in a car and drive three or four hours to Kandy or the south coast while you are wrecked, or sleep first.
We have a third option, and we should be upfront that it is ours: Private Villa with staff by the beautiful ocean at Nainamadama, on the west coast, 35 minutes from arrivals. By the ocean in a working fishing village, with a pool, a cook and staff. It sleeps 6, in three bedrooms with a king bed each and three bathrooms. $120 all-in for up to four — the airport pickup, the night and breakfast; $10 a head beyond four, so six people is $140 — about $23 each. No cleaning fee, no linen fee, no extras. Check in at any hour, which matters when the flight lands at 3am. Check out at 2pm. The pickup on its own is a flat $40 in a car — any hour, waiting time included, because we do not put a meter on a delayed flight. Book the night and it is waived.
It is rated 4.89 across 109 reviews over 13 years of hosting, and you can read them on Airbnb rather than taking our word for it. The reason it works is the check-in-at-any-hour part: you land, you are in bed in 35 minutes, and you start the actual drive the next morning awake. If you would rather push straight on, say so and we will drive you — we are not going to pretend the four-hour night drive is dangerous when thousands of people do it every week.

What is included
Included: the vehicle, the driver, his meals and his room, fuel, air conditioning, flight tracking and waiting time. Not included: expressway tolls, passed on at cost — the airport link is Rs 400 and the full Southern Expressway Rs 1,300. Extra kilometres beyond the route are LKR 100/km for a car and LKR 200/km for a van, the same rate as everything else, and we tell you before we drive them. No airport surcharge. No night surcharge. No commission from any hotel, shop or showroom — and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.
How the meeting works
Before you fly you get the driver’s name, his photograph, the vehicle and the plate on WhatsApp. He is in the arrivals hall with a name board. If your flight moves, we see it. If you cannot find him, you message the same thread you booked on and someone answers.
The arrivals hall has SIM card counters and a currency exchange immediately after customs. Get both there; it is cheaper and easier than anywhere you will stop later.
Does the month change the price?
Yes, and we publish the rule. December to February is 10% above the rates in the table, March and November 5% above, April, September and October 5% below, and May and June 10% below. That is banded from Sri Lanka’s own 2025 arrival figures. The full month-by-month breakdown is here.
Questions people ask
How much is a taxi from Colombo airport to Kandy?
$74 for a car or $99 for a van as a one-way transfer, per vehicle, 107 km and about 2h 49m. If we are driving your whole trip it is $44 instead, because there is no empty return leg to pay for.
Is the price per person?
Per vehicle. Two people or eight, the van costs the same. That is why a van makes sense for a family and a car for a couple.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track it and wait. No charge for waiting on a delayed arrival, and no night surcharge whatever hour you land.
Is there a cheaper way from the airport?
Yes. There is an airport bus to Colombo, and ride-hailing apps work at the airport if you have a local SIM and are travelling light. For one or two people going to Colombo or Negombo they are genuinely cheaper. For a family with cases going to Kandy at 3am, they are a false economy, and we would rather say that than pretend the bus does not exist.
Can I pay in dollars or euros?
Yes — rupees, dollars, euros or pounds, in cash at the end. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
Do you do the return to the airport?
Yes, at the same rates, and we build the timing around your flight rather than the other way round.
