4 days in Sri Lanka: the Cultural Triangle without the rush
4 days, 493 km and about 13 hours of driving in total. A car with driver for the whole trip is $280 (2–3 people) or $380 in a van (up to 8), at the shoulder rate (July, August); December to February is 10% more and May to June 10% less. That is the vehicle, the driver, his food and his room, and fuel — not hotels. Four days buys you the ancient cities and nothing else, and that is the right trade. This is the densest concentration of things worth seeing on the island. Prices last verified September 2026.

Priced on 4 days on the road at $70 a day for a car, because your driver is committed to you whether the vehicle moves or not. The 493 km alone would come to $202, so the days are the higher and fairer number here. 1 of the 4 legs are distances we have measured on the road; the rest are modelled from road geometry and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Drive times are modelled, not logged — our drivers are recording real ones and these numbers get replaced as they come in.
Why this shape
Dambulla is on the road in, not a stop you drive to. An hour in the cave temple, then on to Sigiriya.
Two nights at Sigiriya is deliberate. It lets you climb the rock at 6.30am when it is cool and empty, rather than at eleven with a queue on the staircase, and it gives you Pidurangala for sunset on the other evening.
Polonnaruwa is a bicycle day. The site is flat, spread out, and much better on two wheels than in and out of a car.
What we left out, and why
Every itinerary is a subtraction. These are the ones we made, so you can put them back if we chose wrong.
- KandyThree hours from Sigiriya. On a four-day trip that is most of a day for the Temple of the Tooth, and the evening puja is the only time worth being there.
- AnuradhapuraThe older and larger of the two ancient capitals, and the one people cut. If you would rather have it than Polonnaruwa, say so — it is the same number of days.
- The hillsNuwara Eliya and Ella are five and seven hours away. They are a different trip.
When to go, and what it costs then
The Cultural Triangle is the driest part of the island and works most of the year. It is genuinely hot from March to May; the climb up Sigiriya at midday in April is not a pleasure.
Our prices move with demand, and we publish the rule rather than hiding it. The bands below are set from Sri Lanka’s own 2025 arrivals figures — 2,362,521 visitors across the year, from 258,928 in December down to 132,919 in May. Demand swings 1.95×. We move price by 20 points.

Questions people ask
Sigiriya or Pidurangala?
Both, on different days. Sigiriya is the site — the frescoes, the mirror wall, the palace on top. Pidurangala is the rock next door you climb to photograph Sigiriya from. Two nights gives you both without either being rushed.
Is Dambulla worth stopping for?
Yes, and it costs you an hour on a road you are driving anyway. Five caves, about 150 Buddha images, painted rock overhead. Take socks — the stone gets hot underfoot.
What is included in the price?
The vehicle, the driver, his meals and his accommodation, fuel and air conditioning. Not included: hotels, expressway tolls (passed on at cost), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. We take no commission from any hotel, shop or showroom, and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.
How do we pay?
In cash at the end, in rupees, dollars, euros or pounds. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
