Southern Sri Lanka itinerary: fort, beaches and a dawn safari
8 days, 695 km and about 18 hours of driving in total. A car with driver for the whole trip is $560 (2–3 people) or $760 in a van (up to 8), at the shoulder rate (July, August); December to February is 10% more and May to June 10% less. That is the vehicle, the driver, his food and his room, and fuel — not hotels. Eight days on the south coast, from Galle Fort east to the Yala gate. Under 700 km in total — the least driving of any route on this site. Prices last verified September 2026.

Priced on 8 days on the road at $70 a day for a car, because your driver is committed to you whether the vehicle moves or not. The 695 km alone would come to $285, so the days are the higher and fairer number here. 1 of the 7 legs are distances we have measured on the road; the rest are modelled from road geometry and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Drive times are modelled, not logged — our drivers are recording real ones and these numbers get replaced as they come in.
Why this shape
Two nights at Galle Fort, because the fort is an evening and a morning place and one night gives you neither properly.
The coast is done west to east, so the drives get shorter as you go and the last one is to the park gate for a dawn start.
Hiriketiya is the stop that is not in the guidebooks: a horseshoe bay with a beginner-friendly break and a small, good food scene.
What we left out, and why
Every itinerary is a subtraction. These are the ones we made, so you can put them back if we chose wrong.
- Kandy and the ancient citiesThe whole point of this route is that it does not cross the island. If you want the Cultural Triangle, take the ten-day route.
- EllaThree hours up the escarpment. It fits if you have ten days and want the hills as well.
- UdawalaweSwap it for Yala if you are travelling with young children — more elephants, fewer jeeps, shorter drives.
When to go, and what it costs then
December to March is the reliable window. April and November are inter-monsoon and often fine. June to October is the southwest monsoon: swimmable on good days, but if the beach is the whole point of the trip, come in the dry season or go east instead.
Our prices move with demand, and we publish the rule rather than hiding it. The bands below are set from Sri Lanka’s own 2025 arrivals figures — 2,362,521 visitors across the year, from 258,928 in December down to 132,919 in May. Demand swings 1.95×. We move price by 20 points.

Questions people ask
Is the south coast good for swimming?
Between December and April, yes, and Mirissa, Hiriketiya and the bays around Tangalle are all sheltered. In monsoon months the surf gets serious and the currents are not for casual swimmers.
Can we see whales?
Blue whales pass Mirissa roughly December to April, and the boats go out at dawn. It is a real sighting rate, not a marketing one, but it is weather-dependent and we would rather tell you that now than on the morning.
What is included in the price?
The vehicle, the driver, his meals and his accommodation, fuel and air conditioning. Not included: hotels, expressway tolls (passed on at cost), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. We take no commission from any hotel, shop or showroom, and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.
How do we pay?
In cash at the end, in rupees, dollars, euros or pounds. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
