Sri Lanka east coast itinerary: the answer to a May or June trip
8 days, 1,063 km and about 28 hours of driving in total. A car with driver for the whole trip is $560 (2–3 people) or $760 in a van (up to 8), at the shoulder rate (July, August); December to February is 10% more and May to June 10% less. That is the vehicle, the driver, his food and his room, and fuel — not hotels. The east coast is dry when the south is wet. If your dates fall between May and October, this is the trip we would sell you instead of the classic route, and in May or June it is also 10% cheaper because it lands in our trough months. Priced on 8 days on the road at $70 a day for a car, because your driver is committed to you whether the vehicle moves or not. The 1,063 km alone would come to $436, so the days are the higher and fairer number here. 1 of the 5 legs are distances we have measured on the road; the rest are modelled from road geometry and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Drive times are modelled, not logged — our drivers are recording real ones and these numbers get replaced as they come in.
Why this shape
Four nights at Arugam Bay, because it is a place to stay rather than a place to see. The point break works through the southwest monsoon months and the town is built around not hurrying.
Trincomalee first for Nilaveli and Pigeon Island, and Koneswaram on the rock above the harbour.
Kumana on the way through: the east's answer to Yala, a serious bird lagoon, and almost no jeeps.
What we left out, and why
Every itinerary is a subtraction. These are the ones we made, so you can put them back if we chose wrong.
- The south coastIt is in the monsoon during this route's season. Doing both means accepting one of them will be wet.
- The hill countryReachable — Ella is three hours from Arugam Bay — and a natural add if you have eleven days.
- JaffnaNorth rather than east. It shares the same season, so the two combine well on a longer trip.
When to go, and what it costs then
June to October. The northeast monsoon arrives in December and runs to March, so this is the exact inverse of the usual advice for Sri Lanka. Our own May and June prices also sit 10% below the shoulder rate, which makes an early-season east coast trip the best-value fortnight on this site.

Is the east really dry in June?
It is the drier side of the island then. Sri Lanka has two monsoons running in opposite directions, and the reason so many people are told "do not come in May" is that the advice is written for the south and west.
Is there anything to do at Arugam Bay if we do not surf?
Kumana for the birds, Lahugala for elephants, Muhudu Maha Viharaya on the beach, and a lagoon full of crocodiles you can watch from a bridge. It is quiet, and that is the point.
What is included in the price?
The vehicle, the driver, his meals and his accommodation, fuel and air conditioning. Not included: hotels, expressway tolls (passed on at cost), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. We take no commission from any hotel, shop or showroom, and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.
How do we pay?
In cash at the end, in rupees, dollars, euros or pounds. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
