3 days in Sri Lanka: one region, done properly
3 days, 428 km and about 11 hours of driving in total. A car with driver for the whole trip is $210 (2–3 people) or $285 in a van (up to 8), at the shoulder rate (July, August); December to February is 10% more and May to June 10% less. That is the vehicle, the driver, his food and his room, and fuel — not hotels. Three days is a stopover, not a tour of the island. Priced on 3 days on the road at $70 a day for a car, because your driver is committed to you whether the vehicle moves or not. The 428 km alone would come to $176, so the days are the higher and fairer number here. 0 of the 3 legs are distances we have measured on the road; the rest are modelled from road geometry and our own average pace of 38 km/h. Drive times are modelled, not logged — our drivers are recording real ones and these numbers get replaced as they come in.
Why this shape
Three days means two nights and roughly six hours of driving in total. Spend those six hours crossing to Kandy and back and you will have seen a windscreen.
The south-west is the right choice from the airport: expressway all the way to Galle, a walled Dutch fort you can do on foot in an evening, and whales off Mirissa between December and April.
If your three days fall between June and October, we would send you to the Cultural Triangle instead — the south coast is in the southwest monsoon and the sea is rough. Ask and we will re-plan it.
What we left out, and why
Every itinerary is a subtraction. These are the ones we made, so you can put them back if we chose wrong.
- KandySix hours of driving from the south coast and back for one temple you will see in a hurry. It deserves a trip where it is not a detour.
- SigiriyaFive hours each way. On a three-day trip it costs you the entire middle day.
- YalaA safari means a 5am start and a night in Tissamaharama. That is your whole trip for one game drive.
When to go, and what it costs then
West and south coast: December to March is the reliable window. June to October is the southwest monsoon — swimmable on the good days, but not a sure thing.

Questions people ask
Can I do Sigiriya and the beach in three days?
Not without spending both days in the car. Sigiriya is about five hours from the south coast each way. If Sigiriya is the reason you are coming, fly into Colombo and go straight north — that is the 4-day Cultural Triangle route, not this one.
Is three days worth it at all?
Yes, if you treat it as one region rather than a tour. Galle Fort in the evening light and a morning on the water at Mirissa is a real holiday. A dash across the island is not.
What is included in the price?
The vehicle, the driver, his meals and his accommodation, fuel and air conditioning. Not included: hotels, expressway tolls (passed on at cost), park and site tickets, and anything you buy. We take no commission from any hotel, shop or showroom, and we will not deliver you to one that pays for arrivals.
How do we pay?
In cash at the end, in rupees, dollars, euros or pounds. Nothing up front, and the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you fly.
