Often, yes. Here is when, when not, and why we would rather tell you than talk you out of an app that works.
A third of everything travellers ask about Colombo arrivals is some version of this question, so here is the straight answer rather than the one that suits us.
Solo or a couple, hand luggage, landing in daylight, going somewhere close.
PickMe is Sri Lanka’s own ride-hailing app and Uber works here too. Both operate at the airport, both are cheaper than us, and for a short hop to Negombo or into Colombo they are genuinely the sensible choice. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
One thing nobody tells you: tuk-tuks are not allowed into the airport, so select a car. And drivers here ring rather than message — have WhatsApp working before you land.
Family, cases, a board bag, a small-hours landing, or a long run across the island.
There is an active hustle in that hall. Travellers report unofficial “helpers” pushing overpriced taxis by telling you PickMe and Uber do not operate at the airport. That is simply untrue, and it works often enough to be worth someone’s morning.
And the honest economics. A vehicle in Sri Lanka costs a fortune to put on the road and is usually financed at double-digit interest. That monthly payment does not care what time your flight lands. So a driver who quoted you a price yesterday may take a better trip today and ask you to cancel. It is not malice, it is survival — but it is your 3am, not his.
Not a nicer car, though it is one. You are paying for someone who answers. A named driver decided in advance, his photograph and his plate on WhatsApp before you fly, your flight number watched, and a man standing in arrivals with a board and your name on it at whatever hour you appear.
And the risk is ours, not yours. Nothing is paid up front — you settle with the driver at the end. So if that board is not there, you have lost nothing at all: open PickMe, go where you were going, and we have earned exactly what we deserved. We would rather be judged that way than talk you out of an app that works.
